Living History: Dr. CB Claiborne

Dr. Claudius "CB" Claiborne was the first African American basketball player at Duke University, from which he holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Mel Battle, Chair of Caswell County's Board of Education was excited to share this photo with his childhood friend, Dr. Claudius "CB" Claiborne at the MLK Breakfast in Danville, Va on Monday, January 19.

Dr. Claiborne was the first African American basketball player at Duke University, from which he holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. According to a bio found on the Forum for Scholars and Publics, "Dr. Claiborne also holds advanced degrees in engineering and business from Dartmouth and Washington University in St. Louis, and a Ph.D. in Marketing from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he studied with noted behavioral psychologist M. Joseph Sirgy. He has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator, a Fulbright Scholar, Sasakawa Fellow, and Coors Eminent Scholar."

That forum, which is part of the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University, hosted a February 2022 conversation with Dr. Claiborne about the History of Black Student-Athletes and Activism at Duke University.
