Parks & Rec Offering Developmental League

13 & Up Girls Softball and 13 & Up Boys Baseball - a developmental league focused on building skills, confidence, and game knowledge

Parks & Rec Offering Developmental League

Caswell County Parks & Recreation has announced registration for its 13 & Up Girls Softball and 13 & Up Boys Baseball programs.

Direct Randy Jefferson says they have worked hard to offer a traditional league at this age level but that registration numbers have consistently been low, making it difficult to form balanced teams and provide a quality game experience.

He says that unfortunately, when that happens, the players are the ones who miss out so in an effort to to better serve local youth athletes and create a more positive experience, they will not be forming a traditional competitive league this season.

Instead, Parks & Rec will be offering a developmental league focused on building skills, confidence, and game knowledge.

  • Players will participate in structured practices
  • Emphasis will be on fundamentals, teamwork, and game situations
  • Possibility of scrimmage games
  • This is not just participation — it’s about learning and preparing athletes for school-level softball and baseball
  • Shirts and hats will be provided

Jefferson says, "the goal is to give every player the opportunity to grow, improve, and be better prepared for the next level—while avoiding the challenges we’ve faced with low numbers at this age group in the past."

! REGISTRATION CLOSES NEXT FRIDAY, APRIL 3 !

Parks & Rec is also looking for VOLUNTEER COACHES! If you are a parent or have experience in baseball or softball and are willing to help, we would love to have you involved. It will take a team effort from our community to make this program successful.

Jefferson says the program also the potential to grow into something more long-term, but only if there is strong interest from players, parents, and coaches.

"It could continue beyond this season and even develop into opportunities like travel teams or expanded programming," Jefferson said. "Whatever direction the group wants to take, Parks & Recreation is committed to supporting it."

For more information or to register, please come by Caswell Parks and Recreation at 228 County Park Road in Yanceyville or call (336) 694-4449.

Parks & Recreation Director, Randy Jefferson, has also offered his cell number, (336) 212-4563 and encourages members of the community to reach out.

"I am always open to good conversations and ideas," he said. "You do not have to speculate why programs are changed or added you can always call me and we will discuss any ideas or issues in a respectful manner."

In this current budget year, the Department also pursued and received grant funding for equipment purchases to support youth football ($20,000 from the North Carolina Amateur Sports) and volleyball ($15,600 from the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region).

After a conversation about citizen advisory boards during a recent meeting of the Caswell County Board of Commissioners, Chairman Tim Yarbrough asked Interim County Manager Melissa Williamson to consider reestablishing an advisory council for the Department.

Caswell County Parks and Recreation's Advisory Council was formally dissolved several years ago, during the tenure of former County Manager, Bryan Miller, whose time with the County ended in August of 2023.

If you have an interest in volunteering your time and talent to building strong county recreation programs, please reach out to the Director or Interim County Manager.
