Rabies Vaccinations at APS
APS-Caswell is offering 1-year rabies vaccinations for $10 at the shelter. Available by appointment only.
Animal Protection Society of Caswell County (APS-Caswell) has kicked off the new year asking Caswell residents to check their pets records to make sure they are up to date on their rabies vaccination.
APS-Caswell is also offering 1-year rabies vaccinations for $10 at the shelter, located at 836 County Home Road in Yanceyville. Please call them at (336) 694‑4921 or email info@apscaswell.org to schedule your appointment.
North Carolina law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets 16 weeks and older to have a current rabies vaccination. State law also requires that dogs and cats wear their rabies vaccination tag on their collar at all times.
Unvaccinated pets potentially exposed to rabies are generally quarantined for 10 days (at the owner's cost) while unvaccinated pets with known exposures may be quarantined for as much as six months, or euthanized.
The survival rate for rabies in humans is nearly 0% once symptoms appear, but it is 100% preventable with prompt post-exposure treatment (PEP), which includes vaccines and immunoglobulin after a potential exposure.
Over the past two years, Caswell has had two animals test positive for rabies - one dog and one skunk.
However, public health experts caution against relaying upon testing data to determine the prevalence of rabies in a locality. They explain that wild animals are frequently not tested, even if the animal has exhibited signs or symptoms of rabies because animals are only sent to the State Laboratory of Public Health if there is reason to believe there has been an exposure involving a human or unvaccinated pet.
Their advice? Assume your pet may be exposed to rabies and protect them, your family, and your community by keeping their rabies vaccination up to date.
