In February, the Yanceyville Council approved a motion to use local funds to replace an expired FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant that provided funding to support firefighter response on qualifying incidents (fire calls, heavy equipment operations, and rescue calls) at a rate of $20 per firefighter, per incident and $15 per hour for firefighter training, up to a maximum of 36 hours.

Payments were to be made retroactive to January 1, 2026.

During the April 7 meeting of the Council, the Town Manager reported that the NC Fire Chief Consultant had recommended two key updates that should be implemented before the Town begins processing those payments to firefighters.
