Kids Fish at Farmer Lake
103 children received fishing rod and reel combos
Farmer Lake in Yanceyville welcomed nearly 200 people at its August 8 Kids' Fishing and Fun Day, giving away 103 fishing rods to area youth. Most came early, before the heat of the day set in, to enjoy free bank fishing and a family hotdog picnic.
Photos by Shannon Moretz / The NC Wildlife Resources Commission were available for questions and offered interactive games, including "Spot the Bluegill". Children were quick to return to the water's edge after lunch to get in a few more casts.
Often referred to simply as "Farmer Lake", the 365-acre lake opened to the public in 1986, serving as the water supply for the Town of Yanceyville's municipal water system. Farmer Lake is home to black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, common carp, and bass (both large mouth and striped hybrid.)
Because it supplies Yanceyville with drinking water, jet skis, water skiing, tubing, and swimming are not allowed, but the lake provides a large boat ramp and has both kayaks and canoes available for rent.
Visitors to the lake can also enjoy a one-mile walking trail and a covered pavilion complete with picnic tables. charcoal grills, lights, cooling fans, running water, and electricity. The pavilion is also equipped with a projection screen and retractable solar screens, making it a great outdoor space for meetings and/or trainings.
The lake is open Wednesday - Saturday 7am - 7pm and on Sundays 1pm - 7pm March 1 - November 30, with special waterfowl days announced each year for duck hunters with season lake passes.
