Readers Ask: Why Did the Sheriff's Office Publicize Checkpoint Locations?
Turns out, the checkpoints were intended to deter a lot more than drunk drivers celebrating the week of July 4th.
On Saturday, June 27 the Caswell County Sheriff's Office shared a post on Facebook notifying "citizens in the area of NC 119S, NC 62 S, and E Hughes Mill Rd. that there will be highway checkpoint stations".
The post was shared 467 times and raised a lot of eyebrows. Many people assumed the checkpoints were part of "Booze It & Lose It," North Carolina’s statewide anti-impaired driving campaign, run by the Governor's Highway Safety Program and questioned why law enforcement would disclose those potential checkpoint locations ahead of time.
