School Board Changes Start Times for Tiered Bus Routing
The Caswell County School day will operate according to a new schedule next year, which staff says will reduce the amount of time students are spending on the school bus.
On Monday May 11, the Caswell County Board of Education reconsidered their decision regarding tiered bus routes and approved changes to the start and end times of the school day for local public school students.
On April 27, the Board voted against a staff recommendation to adjust the start and ending times of the school day to allow for the implementation of a tiered bus routing system to reduce student ride times without increasing the number of drivers needed. John Berdine, Director of Transportation for Caswell County Schools explained that the tiered bus routing would only work if there was at least a one-hour difference in start times between the elementary and middle/high school levels.
The school district currently uses 21 buses to run 22 routes. The average ride time is nearly 109.9 minutes, just ten minutes shy of two hours. The tiered routing system proposed would use 22 buses to run 30 routes, reducing the average ride time to just over an hour, 67.67 minutes.
