School Board Requests More Cuts to Local Budget, Rejects Cuts to Teacher Supplements and Charter Schools
One board member says it is not enough to move money around on paper without making significant cuts while another warns that the "knife is only so sharp."
Fiscal Year (FY) 2026-2027 began July 1 but Caswell County Schools still does not have an approved local budget. During their September 14 meeting, the Caswell County Board of Education sent the drafted budget back to staff for a third time.
On August 24, the Board had requested staff make $123,842 in cuts to reduce the fund balance allocation to $300,000. The budget brought to the Board on September 14 reflected a fund balance allocation of $300,000, but it also cut funding for teacher supplements and allocated only $345,000 for Charter Schools when the district was required to send nearly $431,000 to Charter Schools last year.
“To me, we’re moving numbers to make it look good, but it’s not realistic,” said Vice Chairman Joel Lillard.
