Dinner, like the tide, doesn’t need to be rigid to be real. It can be improvised and playful.

Last Fourth of July, I took my 18-year-old granddaughter to the beach to celebrate her graduation from (and survival of) high school. Just the two of us. We had no plans of playing putt-putt or shopping, nothing beyond sand and sun and a chance to spend time together before she took on the world.
