Veterans Services Officer Returns to Caswell July 21
VSOs are professionals accredited by the Veterans Administration (VA) to provide free assistance to veterans and their families. They help identify eligible VA benefits, gather supporting evidence, submit claims, and file appeals.
A Veterans Services Officer (VSO) will be at the Caswell Senior Center on Tuesday, July 21 to assist local veterans and their families.
VSOs are professionals accredited by the Veterans Administration (VA) to provide free assistance to veterans and their families. They help identify eligible VA benefits, gather supporting evidence, submit claims, and file appeals.
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7316 Commander Keith Newcomer, and Senior Vice Commander Fred Smith, explained to the Caswell County Board of Commissioners in May that Caswell is one of only three counties in the state that does not have a dedicated VSO. In the past, an officer came twice a month to meet local veterans at the Caswell County Senior Center but those visits stopped in March due to a lack of available state funding for VSO travel.
In June, Commissioners approved a $15,706 one-year shared use agreement with Alamance County to ensure that an Alamance County VSO would be able to visit Caswell twice a month to assist local veterans.
Those twice monthly dates have not yet been scheduled, but will begin July 21.
Caswell County veterans are also invited to enjoy free coffee and conversation at the "Vet Connect" meetings on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 9am at the Caswell County Senior Center.
