BYHS Football Coach Goes to Work Recruiting & Connecting
Meet Coach Johnson, who is putting in the work to connect with players, their families, and the community.
Heart. Pride. Discipline.
That is the foundation upon which Coach Ryan Johnson intends to build the football program at Bartlett Yancey High School and his work is already underway.
The Caswell County Board of Education made the decision to name Johnson the new Head Coach of the Buccaneers on Monday, March 30 and by that Wednesday, he was on campus, meeting potential players.
Several of those athletes, out of school this week for Spring Break, came out Tuesday morning to a player meet-up breakfast at Bojangles in Yanceyville. However, the morning did not start with talk of football. It started with a genuine interest in how the students had spent their weekend, questions about communication preferences, and noticing how many of them were also employed.
"I've been hired as a football coach, but it's about a lot more than football," Johnson said later, explaining that his goal was not just to build a strong football program, but to help shape strong, successful young adults. "One of my coaches once told me, you play football, but that's not who you are."
